FNSB Statement on the Ester Volunteer Fire Department’s Roof Collapse
April 4, 2021 (Fairbanks, AK) – Earlier today, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Administration was notified that the roof over the Ester Volunteer Fire Department’s (EFVD) west bay had collapsed. This event took place at approximately 1:45 am today.
Borough Administration in communication with EFVD immediately took action to confirm that no one had been injured and that the building’s insurance carrier had been notified. Fire services for the Ester area are being referred to and coordinated with Chena Goldstream Fire Department.
Borough Mayor Bryce Ward said, “The Ester Volunteer Fire Department staff did an excellent job clearing and securing the building after the roof collapse early this morning. I am thankful that no one was injured during this unfortunate event. We can always rebuild a building, however, the lives of our people are the most important thing. Our Public Works Department will work with EVFD and insurance personnel to establish a clearer picture of the timeline for repairs and the reinstatement of services. We thank the Chena Goldstream Fire Department staff for assisting with emergency calls during this time.”
The building is closed to the public and we ask that the community not visit the area. The building will undergo a full structural assessment in the days to come. FNSB Administration and Public Works along with EVFD will provide updates as they become available.
The Ester Volunteer Fire Department is located at 3750 Old Nenana Highway and was incorporated in 1977. They moved into their current location in 1982 to provide emergency fire services for the Ester Fire Service Area.
