Borough Mayor Announces Launch of the Borough Risk Matrix for COVID-19
January 25, 2021 (Fairbanks) – Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Bryce J. Ward announces the launch of the Borough Risk Matrix for COVID-19. Mayor Ward said, "As we continue to navigate through this pandemic as a community, this tool will help us continue to protect and maintain the health of borough patrons and staff. I have been frustrated with the appearance of a lack of connection between the data and our mitigation measures and strategies. This matrix is our best effort to correlate our community data into actionable steps to keep our community members and staff safe."
How It Works
Current COVID-19 data is taken from the State of Alaska and is assigned a weighted value for each indicator to generate an overall score or risk level. Ranging from Low to Extremely High and identified by color, each level correlates to specific mitigation measures to be considered. Three leading indicators are used: 7-Day Case Average, Percent Positivity, and Hospitalizations (3-Day Average). All of this information is shown in an online dashboard, accessible to staff and the public. The dashboard is updated daily as source information becomes available.

Next Steps
The public is encouraged to review the Risk Matrix and comments are encouraged. This will be a useful tool in the Borough's continued COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Find it on the Borough website under Government > COVID-19 Updates or by going to fnsb.gov/riskmatrix
“I am hopeful that this tool will help clearly describe how the Borough is considering all the data available to make sound operational decision as we transition out of a pandemic." - Mayor Ward
